Art Gallery pays tribute to our most outstanding living artists

South Australian Living Artists Festival Art Gallery of South Australia  3 - 19 August 2007

The state’s premier visual arts institution, the Art Gallery of South Australia, will host more than 500 artists, curators, collectors, arts industry professionals and supporters tonight to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival. At this special event, the Gallery will also launch a special free exhibition showcasing work by some of our most outstanding contemporary South Australian artists; all of them past recipients of the prestigious SALA monograph.

Artists whose work features in the exhibition include: Annette Bezor, James Darling, Kathleen Petyarre, Nick Mount, Ian Abdulla, Deborah Paauwe, Michelle Nikou, Aldo Iacobelli and Julie Blyfield. Works on show embrace a diverse range of media from painting, photo-media, sculpture and installation, glass and jewellery.

“The Art Gallery of South Australia is proud to be the leading supporter and promoter of the visual arts in South Australia, displaying exceptional work by South Australian artists every day of the year” says Art Gallery Director, Christopher Menz. “The 2007 SALA exhibition highlights just some of the many local works purchased by the Gallery over the past decade, giving us all the opportunity to reflect on the great breadth of talent that exists in our State” says Menz.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to hear from the artists themselves at a series of free Sunday afternoon talks held in the exhibition:

5 August:       James Darling (2pm), Deborah Paauwe (2.30pm)
12 August:     Aldo Iacobelli (2pm), Michelle Nikou (2.30pm)
19 August:     Annette Bezor (2pm), Ian Abdulla (2.30pm)

The 2007 SALA exhibition is located in galleries 9 and 10 at the Art Gallery of South Australia and is open daily 10am to 5pm from tomorrow. Admission is free.
