Garry Stewart gears up G

Sex, death, hysteria and jealousy are providing Australian Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Garry Stewart and his dancers with plenty of ingenious material on the eve of the world premiere of ADT’s new work, G.

G is Garry Stewart’s re-envisioning of the ballet Giselle.

It’s fascinating reworking a classical iconic ballet. As a director I draw together threads that show the universality of the narrative and how the themes might embody a relevance to our current conditions. Simultaneously I am portraying the distinctions and differences between contemporary values and mores and that of a previous era. Giselle is referred to as the Hamlet of the classical ballet canon so certainly it is very rich territory encompassing sex, death, hysteria, gender, class and the supernatural.  Like Swan Lake it is at the pinnacle of the art form and has been integral in forming the conventions that constitute the bedrock of classical ballet tradition. As such, there is much to uncover and G is the richer for it,” said Garry.

G fully showcases Garry Stewart’s trademark full tilt athletic choreography and its rapid-fire physical prowess.

Larissa McGowan, an award-winning dancer who has been working with Garry at ADT during the past eight years, has taken on the role of assistant choreographer for G.

“This is an incredible opportunity for me,” said Larissa. “As a dancer and a young choreographer I’ve been privileged to participate in the creation of all of Garry’s works for ADT over the past 8 years. The extremely diverse physicality of G draws on many different movement forms including gymnastics, ballet, breakdance, even Butoh! It’s a totally thrilling movement palette that’s riveting to watch and equally as exhilarating to dance.”

TRUE STORIES - DOUBLE BILL

EMERET LU & X300 - BANGARRA DANCE THEATRE COMPANY

Emeret Lu (Very Old Things) The passion and energy of the traditional people of the Torres Strait Islands fuel this exhilarating new work by choreographer Elma Kris.  She explores her people’s love of the land, the sea and of each other with an exuberance handed down from generation to generation.  The power and excitement of dances celebrating rain, wind, the hunt, desire and pleasure mingle with the charm of the spiritual to create an uplifting work of lasting imagery and a thrilling experience of a fascinating and little-known culture.

X300 In the 1950s a series of atomic explosions was conducted on Maralinga Tjarutja traditional lands.  The code name of the test site was X300.  Frances Rings’ new work powerfully and spectacularly explores a landscape cleared of occupation and assumed vacant but which, in reality, became a contaminated desert which poisoned the people.  Rings’ work is known for its theatricality and inventiveness.  X300 will bring Australian audiences a memorable evening of lasting imagery.

True Stories shows precisely why Bangarra Dance Theatre is consistently the most challenging of the country’s dance companies’ The Australian, May 2007

Four Faces By Jay Robinson

Four dance solos about modern man: Four Faces By Jay Robinson

7.30pm 15-16 and 22-23 November 2007
Studio Three, Level 3 Adelaide Centre for the Arts, 39 Light Square, Adelaide

Tickets $18/$13 through Venue*Tix (08) 8225 8888 or at the door

Four Faces is an athletic, contemporary dance performance exploring what it means to be a gay man in 2007.

Four Faces has been developed by Jay Robinson through mentorships with three leading national choreographers, Anton, Gerard Van Dyck and Troy Mundy, who have each been able to respond to the theme from both a physical and personal perspective.

Gritty, gutsy and funny the performance begins with Jay’s personal journey as a gay man, the innocence of childhood and the environmental influences that affected his early years. The second solo piece, choreographed with Anton, focuses on the search for a genuine connection within a sometimes superficial community.

Working with Gerard Van Dyck, Jay’s third solo piece takes a theatrical look beyond the stereotypes of the gay community to explore the masculinity of gay men. For the final solo work Jay, mentored by Troy Mundy, takes a tongue in cheek look at the world of gay internet dating, exposing the sensitivity, desperation and excitement this future form of connections between gay men can provide.

Jay Robinson said: “The choreographers I’ve chosen for this work have really challenged me and accessed my skills in a way that will really engage with the audience. The performance will express the themes of isolation, desperation, connections with people and conveying that gay men are unique but essentially the searches we go through as people are the same as everyone else.”

Since graduating from Adelaide Centre for the Arts in 2006 Jay Robinson has created his own opportunities within the dance industry. He presented Shelf Life with Bare Bone Collective at this year’s Adelaide Fringe and from August he spent two months unpaid secondment with Dancenorth. The company then invited Jay to perform in their double bill Dis-Integration – a dance theatre piece created by international choreographers Paolo Castro and Jo Stone.

In recognition of his achievements as an independent dancer and the opportunities he has created for himself, Jay recently won the $2,000 Keith Michell Award. Sponsored by Southern Theatre and Arts Supporters (STARS) and the Friends of the Helpmann Academy, the award celebrates Adelaide-born Keith Michell’s distinguished career spanning five decades as an international star of stage and screen.
