Second to None by Vitalstatistix and Kurruru

An Aboriginal and Maritime Journey    Second to None by Vitalstatistix and Kurruru

An outdoor, history-making performance and installation event.

Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 November 7.30pm Departure from Waterside, 11 Nile Street, Port Adelaide
Vitalstatistix Theatre Company and Kurruru Indigenous Youth Performing Arts, both based in Port Adelaide, have jointly created Second to None, a celebration of the history of Port Adelaide, as new development takes The Port into the next stage of its history.
Second To None takes its name and its inspiration from the translation of the Latin motto Haud Pluribus Impar in the 1856 Port Adelaide Coat of Arms, which depicts a sailor and an Aboriginal man, representing the two communities that most clearly define the unique and distinctive character of the oldest working community in South Australia .
Second to None is a collaboration between directors Maude Davey, Sasha Zahra, Kaurna Cultural Director Karl Telfer and Cultural Director Diat Alferink (, Kurruru), leading a team of highly skilled indigenous and non-indigenous artists, based on an original concept by Janine Peacock.
At the heart of Second to None are stories of dispossession, resistance and resilience, industrialisation and the recognition that comes through shared participation in work. Tickets $25 (Concession $15) from Vitalstatistix 8447 6211

Sizwe Banzi is Dead 6 - 17 Nov

The Adelaide Festival Centre and Le Centre International de Créations Théâtres  (CICT) proudly present the

internationally acclaimed production of Sizwe Banzi is Dead in the Space Theatre from 6 - 17 November.

Directed by the legendary Peter Brook, one of the great figures of contemporary theatre, Sizwe Banzi is

Dead highlights the struggle of black workers during the apartheid era and is a humorous production of

beautiful simplicity. Sizwe Banzi is Dead focuses on themes of identity, humanity, truth and survival.  Peter

Brook’s moving, funny and deeply engaging production features Habib Dembélé, writer and political activist

who stood as a presidential candidate for the Republic of Mali, and Pitcho Womba Konga, a celebrated

rapper and hip-hop artist from the Congo.

Sizwe Banzi is Dead is the second of three ‘Township Plays’ created by Athol Fugard with John Kani and

Winston Ntshona.  These plays are based on the everyday life of the urban black community in South Africa

during Apartheid.  Sizwe Banzi is Dead began its life in the townships before touring the world to massive

critical and popular acclaim.  Created at a time when every black South African over the age of 16 was

required to carry an identity book, Sizwe Banzi is Dead was first performed in 1972, eight years after

Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
