SUE HEALEY DANCE FILM SHOWCASE & FORUM

Wednesday April 4th  @ 7:15pm IRIS CINEMA (behind the Mercury)

13 Morphett St Adelaide FREE!!

Sue Healey is an award winning choreographer, educator and dance-film maker based in Sydney. She is in Adelaide to mentor emerging dance film artists and is presenting a one-off showcase of her film work for Adelaide audiences. The screening will be followed by a Q&A. This is a unique opportunity for filmmakers, dancers, choreographers, and anyone interested in hybrid arts to meet one of Australia’s most celebrated dance filmmakers.

Her works have been described as masterful in their handling of organic human stories, space and time through dance. Her films transcend the performance space, allowing a new focus and magic to enter; time lingers, even reverses, details are enlarged for intricate scrutiny, elements are introduced in an alchemic fashion, all using the genius of cinematography and an acute awareness of movement.

Friends of the Earth’s 3rd annual Nepabunna community work trip!

FoE Adelaide is holding its 3rd community work trip to Nepabunna indigenous township, located on Adnyamathanha land in the spectacular Gammon Ranges in northern SA! The trip is open to all interested in indigenous solidarity, cultural exchange and understanding.
After the success of previous trips, we have been invited back to continue our work and also participate in celebrations recognising the 10 year anniversary of the nearby Nantawarrina Indigenous Protected Area!
Our previous work includes harvesting and maintaining a large bush tucker garden, playing with a handful of very energetic children on school holidays, building a composting toilet, creating food gardens, and delivering chickens and fruit trees! We have also felt incredibly honoured to be shown local sacred sites and special places.
Initial ideas for the upcoming trip include expanding our school holiday program (for example, helping kids to make short films using a digital camera, art and craft activities etc), continuing to help build the eco-tourism potential of the town (for income generation and thus independence), propagating seedlings of native species, maintenance work in the Indigenous Protected Area, and continuing to strengthen our relationships with members of the community. Our activities are always done at the direction of or in consultation with a community leader. Volunteers are fully covered by the FoE Australia insurance policy.
WHEN: The next trip is proposed for the 14th - 21st April (ie during the uni holidays), but is flexible depending on trip participants. The community is a day’s drive from Adelaide, and we will be hiring a minibus to transport participants there and back.
COST: The cost of the trip is $100 which covers fuel and delicious organic food for the week. Meals are communally prepared and shared.
ACCOMMODATION: Camping next to the bush tucker garden. Participants need either a swag or tent, or we can arrange for you to share a tent with someone.
INTERESTED? We will be holding an info session next Tuesday night, 7.30pm at the Conservation Centre, 120 Wakefield St, Adelaide. Please come along and see photos and hear stories of previous trips, as well as plotting the next adventure!
Also please email (sophie.green@foe.org.au) if interested in coming and if you have any special needs/requests/ideas.
Should be an amazing experience!

write a letter or email a Labor MP or senator

30,000 children around the world die every single day as a result of extreme poverty. If Labor is serious about halving extreme poverty if it wins government, it needs to make a clear timetabled commitment to increase Australia’s overseas aid.

The Australian Labor Party will shortly hold its national conference in Sydney. Here it will finalise its policy platform for the next three years including the policies it will take to the next federal election. This makes NOW a critical time for you to tell Labor that we need a timetabled commitment to increase our overseas aid contribution.

Australia must commit to 0.7%
One of the central calls of the Make Poverty History campaign is for aid to be increased to 0.5 per cent of Australia’s national income by 2010, and 0.7 per cent by 2015. This is necessary to achieve the Millennium Development Goals – the eight, internationally-agreed goals to halve global poverty by 2015.

It’s easy to send your message
Please take the time to write a letter or email a Labor MP or senator asking them to support a timetabled commitment to increasing aid at the forthcoming ALP conference.

Join a lobby group in your state
Ever wanted to lobby your MP? Perhaps you’re thinking about it for the first time. Oxfam Australia is putting together teams of concerned voters to lobby their local MPs on a range of issues including the appalling state of Indigenous health.

You don’t need to be an expert to get involved – we’ll provide you with all the training you’ll need. And if you’ve lobbied before, why not come along and share your skills. Interested? Training sessions will be held in April.

Amnesty International on David Hicks

David Hicks will be home within weeks after more than five years without justice, however he is just one of over 350 other Guantánamo Bay detainees whose fate remains uncertain.

In a deal hammered out over the weekend, Mr Hicks will return home to spend nine months in an Australian prison. A disquieting element of the deal prohibits Mr Hicks from discussing any element of his five year incarceration with the media and a declaration that he was never tortured.

Read Amnesty International Australia’s full statement.

Amnesty International activists all over Australia and the world have kept the case of David Hicks in the news, making it difficult for either the US or Australian Government to sweep it under the rug.

However, this is just one case. There are hundreds of people in detention at Guantánamo for whom there is no end in sight. Amnesty International will continue to campaign for human rights and dignity for those in Guantánamo Bay and elsewhere.

We’ll also keep you updated about the Guantánamo Bay cell. We hope you will continue your support as we continue the call for the closure of Guantánamo Bay.
