Mike Cooper (UK) 3 and 5 apr

MIKE COOPER (UK) plays Adelaide

For the past 40 years Mike Cooper has been an international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art and sound installations. He is also a music journalist, writing features for magazines, particularly on Pacific music and musicians, a visual artist, film and video maker, collector of Hawaiian shirts and appears on more than 60 records to date. In 1994 Mike made his first trip through the Pacific via Tahiti, Fiji and Hawaii to Australia and New Zealand and has returned to tour every year since.
This year Cooper returns to Adelaide to put in a solo performance at the Exeter Hotel on Tuesday 3rd April, and contributes a live improvised music score to Onibaba, a classic 1964 Japanese psychological thriller, at Urtext Studios on Thursday 5th April.  Supporting Cooper will be Lenin Simos and Daniel Varricchio respectively, two of Adelaide’s dedicated freely improvised guitar musicians, both fresh from their successful inclusion into the Damo Suzuki Network at Rocket Bar last month where they played behind the infamous former Can frontman.

Indian Ink Theatre Company’s KRISHNAN’S DAIRY 24 – 28 April

The Adelaide Festival Centre presents New Zealand theatre company Indian Ink’s acclaimed work Krishnan’s Dairy in the Dunstan Playhouse from 24 – 28 April 2007. Krishnan’s Dairy takes two of the most clichéd things New Zealanders know about Indians – the Taj Mahal and the corner store and fuses them into a funny touching love story.

Krishnan’s Dairy is a funny, sentimental love story interweaving the epic tale of love behind the Taj Mahal with the modern-day story of Gobi and Zina Krishnan, a young New Zealand couple struggling to keep their business – Krishnan’s Dairy – afloat.

This extraordinary one-man show is written and stars Jacob Rajan and showcases his remarkable versatility as an actor as he plays several different characters. Jacob was nominated for The Stage Award for Acting Excellence at the Edinburgh Festival.

Indian Ink, formed by Jacob Rajan and Justin Lewis in 1996, is one of New Zealand’s most successful theatre companies, performing a total repertoire of three plays – Krishnan’s Dairy, The Pickle King and The Candlestickmaker. Since its debut in 1997, Krishnan’s Dairy has played to over 47,000 people in many countries including New Zealand, Singapore and the UK.

Jacob and Justin say: “We began with the idea of the ’serious laugh’ - the ability of laughter to draw audiences in and open people up. This has combined with a love of masks and the theatrical magic they inspire, to remain a core thread throughout the work. Indian Ink marinates Western theatrical traditions in Indian flavours but, above all, seeks to tell good stories that touch people of all cultures.”

David Hicks: guilt by incarceration

This morning came the news that David Hicks has pleaded guilty. David Hicks surely would have reflected on the fact that years after his initial plea of innocence, he was still locked in a cell 1.8m². Any normal Australian, facing a system weighted so heavily against them and broken by five years of unimaginable privation, is likely to have signed a document that would get them out of Guantanamo — regardless of their guilt or innocence.

David Hicks’ guilty plea is not justice served*, nor does it necessarily reflect Hicks’ guilt — it is simply further evidence of a rank system… Almost every eminent jurist and legal body in the country has condemned a tribunal that has more in common with a circus than justice… - offending basic legal principles of independence and impartiality*.

It would also be highly unusual in any normal court for a counsel to question the presiding judge over their impartiality* — as Major Mori had to, concerning Judge Kohlmann’s rulings.

This is what happens in a flawed system …a severely compromised legal process*. …disregard for basic Australian rights – Brett Solomon is the Executive Director of GetUp!

Unfortunately this is not a case of ‘only in America’

SA needs a legal review commission to stop the existing scam and sham of the law as practiced(exploited) here by Judges and lawyers who know they will not be investigated or held accountable to the rules of court or principles of decency or justice…

The community deserves better.

*Not so unusual in SA -but these questions and issues fall on deaf ears when raised here…

Another uncompromising and uncomfortable performance from Black Lung. The percussion and double bass add beauty to a tough tale of need, desire and jealousy. Style and substance abuse - the stakes are life and death for these lost and flawed characters. the dark side of life indeed.

**** [INTERROBANG] by unstoppable huxtable 29-30 mar

Separate, unrelated sections make up a diverse whole. A clown and a strongman talk philosophy and conjure memories of Monty Python. A persuasive video presentation that would convince any late night TV shopper to shell out their cash. And an athletic, gymnastic dance from three very flexible performers. Hampered by poor sightlines for those at the back of the venue, nonetheless a worthwhile and skilful show.
