CINEMATIC CABARET FILM CLUB

The Cinematic Cabaret Film Club returns this March to the cinema lounge at Headquarters Studio, Richmond. The first three nights in the program are guaranteed to be something special that you won’t see anywhere else, especially in a groovy lounge atmosphere with cinema seating, lounges and bean-bags, making this filmmaking studio and gallery the ideal venue to chill out and catch up on some cinematic gems.
In celebration of Martin Scorsese’s long deserved win at the Academy Awards!
Monday 5 March - 8:30pm MEAN STREETS (18+)
Directors: Martin Scorsese. Actors: Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel
USA, 1973, 110mins.
Mean Streets set the stage for Scorsese’s emergence as one of the greatest American filmmakers. Introducing themes and character types that Scorsese would return to in Taxi Driver, GoodFellas, Casino, and other films, the loosely structured story is drawn directly from Scorsese’s background in the Italian neighborhoods of New York, and it seethes with the raw vitality of a filmmaker who has found his creative groove. As the irresponsible and reckless Johnny Boy, De Niro offers striking contrast to Keitel’s Charlie, who struggles to reconcile gang life with Catholic guilt. More of an episodic portrait than a plot-driven crime story, Mean Streets remains one of Scorsese’s most direct and fascinating films–a masterful calling card for a director whose greatness was clearly apparent from that point forward. –Jeff Shannon
“a true original, and a triumph of personal filmmaking.” — Pauline Kael.
Screening a rare 16mm film print from the National Film and Video Archive.
Monday 30 April FAUST (18+)
Directors: Jan Svankmajer Actors: Petr Cepek, Jan Kraus Czechoslovakia, 1994, 94mins.
Czech animation director Jan Svankmajer who’s new film Lunacy is featuring at the 2007 Adelaide Film Festival takes us on a ride into the darkly surreal world of Faust on Monday 30th of April. An astounding version of the myth of Dr. Faustus. Merging live action with stop motion and claymation, Svankmajer has created an unsettling universe presided over by diabolic life size marionettes and haunted by skulking human messengers from hell.
“Dreamlike, subversive and aggressively disturbing’ - Dave Kehr, New York Daily News
“Bristles with magic” - Anthony Lane, The New Yorker
Friday 11 May CULT ANIMATION (18+)
Local Animator and filmmaker Dan Moncaux who’s short film A Shift In Perception featured at this years Adelaide Film Festival curates a bizarre and hilarious journey through some of the strange animations that you’re not likely to see on your average Saturday mornings.
Presented by Danimations.
Admission by Membership only. $10 Full & $8 Concession for a three month membership that will get you to a minimum of three films. Entry is FREE with a valid film club membership.

Adrian Caon presents Assign each Star to one of its Wars, 26 feb- 25 mar

Series no.11 of the project 101 things to do with an American flag
26 February to 25 March 2007
Barr Smith Library, The University of Adelaide, North Terrace, Adelaide
Library Hours: Monday to Thursday 8am-10pm, Friday 8am-6pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm
Adrian Caon presents an exhibition of drawings depicting each of the 50 stars of the American flag positioned with a war or a military intervention during the 230-year history of the United States of America.
This solo exhibition sees Adrian Caon, a graduate of Adelaide Centre for the ARTS, continue with his ‘101 things to do with an American flag’ project that uses one of the most powerful symbols today as a springboard to explore political issues. The 50 works, mostly drawings with mixed media, are for sale. Half of the proceeds will be donated to Amnesty International.
Adrian initially conceived this series as a learning exercise and test in world history, challenging himself to find 50 military interventions by the USA. However, the challenge quickly dissipated as he discovered a plethora of wars, occupations, bombings, subversions, threatened armed intervention and blockades enforced by its war machines, to choose from.
“For an empire, whose current leaders espouse the spread of peace, the USA has a long history of using violence or the threat of violence to settle disputes with other states for its own interests. Peace is as elusive as ever before,” says Adrian Caon. “The conduct of these leaders, and of the massive military establishments and associated corporations, belie more sinister motives of this empire.”
“The most frightening aspect for me is that our current Australian leaders spout the same problematic rhetoric, giving unqualified support to this empire in its misguided quest for peace. The Australian flag features some stars too.”
