THE HANDSOME FAMILY (USA) 21 feb 07

THE HANDSOME FAMILY (USA) Australian Tour – Feb 2007
All the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico, The Handsome Family return to Australia to appear at The Perth International Arts Festival and headline shows around the country.

The world’s favourite gothic country duo made their first trip down under to appear in Hal Wilner’s Leonard Cohen tribute concert ‘Came So Far For Beauty’, which saw them perform alongside Nick Cave, Cave, Jarvis Cocker and Antony to name a few.

Husband and wife duo Brett and Rennie Sparks return to promote their new record, ‘The Last Days Of Wonder’ (Spunk Records). The album is a collection of love songs sung in airports, garbage dumps, drive-thru windows and shark-infested waters as imagined by Rennie, the lyricist of the band - lyrics that critic Greil Marcus hailed as having “no parallel in modern writing”. Their previous records have been consistently praised by critics, earning them a cult following around the globe, and ‘Last Days Of Wonder’ is no different:

LORD STOMPY v the advertiser

SA Unions says it hopes an Advertiser campaign to stir up controversy about the “Your Rights at Night” union sponsored radio show (Radio Adelaide 101.5FM Every Thursday night from 6 til 7pm) will boost the program’s listenership and encourage more people to take in interest in the independent local music scene.
The newspaper is trying to take SA Unions to task over the lyrics in a song performed by a cross dressing musical polymath about 2 months ago. The quirky performer Lord Stompy appeared on the program with a smorgasbord of satirical offerings, including a song which contained the lyrics “die Johnny die”. The Advertiser is demanding that SA Unions state whether it endorses the phrase as calling for the death of the Prime Minister. “Of course we don’t want the PM dead – we don’t want anyone dead!” SA Unions secretary Janet Giles says. “We would however like to see the PM’s political demise, and are actively campaigning to try to achieve that – in particular with our national day of community action this Thursday November 30, 8am Elder Park and country venues.” “We can only assume the ‘Tiser doesn’t get the satire and has lost its sense of humour, because the alternative - that it wants to suppress freedom of artistic expression - is frightening.” “It’s curious that the Advertiser is trying to hold us somehow responsible for the artistic expression of an independent Adelaide performer. SA Unions believes in freedom of expression, and has no desire to censor this or any other artist.” “Lord Stompy has a commercially released album, is listed on the MusicSA website (http://www.musicsa.com.au/artists/lordstompy/), has appeared at prominent venues such as the Gov and Higher Ground, and generally revels in pushing the boundaries.” “Believe it or not, his Lordship isn’t the first performer in history to use satire and political incorrectness to attract attention – yet his album has not been banned by the nation’s moral guardians; it hasn’t even received a content warning rating.”

“This self-confessed lunatic master of wackiness has appeared on radio during tours of Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT – and has been listed in the Advertiser’s own gig guide. Need we say more?” Ms Giles says.

Make Some Noise to stop domestic violence!

Domestic violence happens everywhere. It affects someone near you. At least 1 in 3 women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. Usually, the abuser is a member of her own family or someone known to her.

Kicking off on November 25 - International Day Against Violence Against Women – until December 10 - Human Rights Day – you can take a different action every day. Tell the world about this human rights scandal and make governments act on their obligations to women.

There are a number of ways you can take action:

- Stay informed: if you haven’t done so yet, check out the video and see why domestic violence *is* a human rights issue.

- Play the game: choose an avatar and join Amnesty’s virtual march against domestic violence! Gather virtual marchers and points and get more info on Amnesty’s Stop Violence Against Women campaign.

- Add your voice:  from Mongolia to the USA, read from 16 stories of women’s shelters across the world and take action to make a difference on the ground.
