CLASSICAL CHORAL MASTERPIECES - Adelaide University Choral Society 17 jun

The Adelaide University Choral Society is proud to present its major orchestral concert for 2006: Haydn’s triumphant Nelson Mass, together with Mozart’s youthful Litaniae Lauretanae (K.195).

The choir will be joined by a stellar line-up of soloists, featuring coloratura soprano Teresa La Rocca, who dazzled Adelaide audiences in the 2005 Bel Canto production of Lucia di Lammermoor, and Sally-Anne Russell, widely acclaimed as one of Australia’s finest mezzo sopranos.
AUCS is delighted to welcome both Teresa and Sally-Anne back home to Adelaide for this special concert.  They will be joined by highly accomplished local favourites Tasso Bouyessis (tenor) and Andrew Turner (baritone).
An orchestra led by concert master Carolyn Lam will complement the choir and soloists in the beautiful St Francis Xavier Cathedral.
AUCS was formed in 1960 with students and staff from the University of Adelaide, and other singing enthusiasts from around the city.  Earlier this year, AUCS hosted the national intervarsity choral festival (held in Adelaide about once every seven years).
The choir performs two or three full choir concerts each year, and has recently begun to extend its program to regional South Australia, with smaller group performances at Sevenhill and as part of the Coriole Live concert series in 2005.

AKIRA AKIRA * DOMINIC REDFERN * WILKINS HILL at the EAF

EXPERIMENTAL ART FOUNDATION
OPENS 6PM THURSDAY 1 JUNE
GALLERY TALKS 3.30PM FRIDAY 2 JUNE
TO 1 JULY TUES-FRI 11-5, SAT 2-5
AKIRA AKIRA paint that never dries
Akira Akira is an Adelaide-based emerging artist and curator who recently graduated from the SA School of Art, University of South Australia. He has been very active on the contemporary art scene in Adelaide and has had several solo exhibitions as well as a number of group exhibitions in Adelaide, Perth and Miami.
“paint that never dries” is an investigation into the notion of surface through the ideas evolving from highly viscous substances and particular characteristics of paint. Through incorporating two distinct phenomena of spillage and tidal wave with the reduced fluidity, continuous malleability and potentiality found in the idea of high viscous paint that never dries, Akira explores ways of expanding the notion of surface and contemplates possible implications of the fluid substances that are ’slow’.
This exhibition has been assisted by The Helpmann Academy, Adelaide.
DOMINIC REDFERN OW!
Melbourne-based artist, Dominic Redfern, uses his own image in splintered narratives to question the truth of video. Utilising cinematic and home video modes of representation to operate in the gap between self-portraiture, fiction and document, his work draws the attention of audiences to the artifice of screen language. Whilst always keeping a sense of humour his work gives _expression to contemporary anxieties surrounding the malevolent and angst-ridden energies that attend the hyper-real space of video.
During the last 12 months Dominic’s work has been shown widely, nationally and internationally, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne, and in the US, Germany, UK, Turkey and Sweden. In July 2003, he travelled to Seoul to take part in ‘Parallel’, an exchange project involving young Korean and Australian artists, and spent November 2003 to February 2004 as Artist in Residence at the Australia Council Studio in Santa Monica, Los Angeles. In 2005 he travelled to Thailand to undertake a residency in Bangkok where his work was shown as part of the Thailand New Media Arts Festival. Dominic’s art practice is informed by his work as a Lecturer in Video at the School of Art at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).
WILKINS HILL Sunny & Kids are Food
Wilkins Hill live and work in Brisbane. Their practice is predominantly installation based, incorporating sculpture, photography, video, sound and text. They are exhibiting two works at EAF including the photographic series ‘Kids are Food’ (2006) and the video installation ‘Sunny’ (2006).
This project was sponsored by NAVA’s Visual and Craft Artist’s Grant, managed by NAVA with financial assistance from the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council and private donations.

Free and Fairer Trade: can trade be both free and equitable in a global economy? 6 jun

International alert series: the BIG issues
Free and Fairer Trade: can trade be both free and equitable in a global economy?

Jointly presented by World Vision Australia and AusAID

Speakers with very different perspectives will probe the thorny question of how to guarantee a free trade system with benefits for all. Mr Andrew Stoler, former Deputy Director–General of the World Trade Organisation; Mr Tim Harcourt, Chief Economist, Australian Trade Commission; and, Dr Patricia Ranald, Principal Policy Officer at the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, will discuss what is at stake, the barriers and the opportunities, and what is to be gained out of our global trade approach.

Among the questions to be probed are: How do the choices we make about what we eat and how we live affect the trade, livelihoods and wellbeing of poor people? What are the things we can do in everyday life to improve outcomes for the less fortunate in our global community? How is the Australian government involved in world trade negotiations and at the Doha Round of the WTO and what role are NGOs playing in influencing the decision makers? And what can developing countries do?

A Schools Alert Forum will be held prior to this event from 4.00pm – 5.00pm at the same venue.  This is an informal session enabling senior students from schools around Adelaide to learn about and probe the issues raised.  Students wishing to attend should register via the Hawke Centre web site or RSVP phone line.

Date:      Tuesday 6th June
When:    5.15pm for 5.30pm start
Venue:   Adelaide Town Hall
Contact: Louise Carnell, the Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre

               Phone:  (08) 8302 0371               Fax:  (08) 8302 0420               Email: louise.carnell@unisa.edu.au
