ADELAIDE CINÉMATHÈQUE from 3 apr

A stirring mixture of the new and the old in film, from the groundbreaking filmmakers of today to the rarely seen films by acknowledged great filmmakers of the past, from documentary to drama to animation, Cinémathèque is Adelaide’s only curated program of the finest, rarest and most unusual filmmaking available.

Opening this year on Monday 3 April, Cinémathèque screens two nights a week (Mondays and Thursdays) at the Mercury Cinema till the end of the year.

Download Calendar.

Opening night: 7:30 Mon 3 April.

DARWIN’S NIGHTMARE (M)

Screened to acclaim at the Sydney Film Festival (FIPRESCI Award) and Melbourne International Film Festival, this film tells the story of the devastating effect on the people of Tanzania following the release into Lake Victoria for commercial harvesting of the voracious Nile Perch.

The director Hubert Sauper says:

In Darwin’s Nightmare I tried to transform the bizarre success story of a fish and the ephemeral boom around this “fittest” animal into an ironic, frightening allegory for what is called the New World Order. I could make the same kind of movie in Sierra Leone, only the fish would be diamonds, in Honduras, bananas, and in Libya, Nigeria or Angola, crude oil. Most of us I guess, know about the destructive mechanisms of our time, but we cannot fully picture them.

The film was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at this year’s Academy Awards. Home Page

7:30 Thurs 6 April

GRIZZLY MAN (M)

Werner Herzog’s latest docudrama uses footage shot by bear lover Timothy Treadwell. Herzog makes relevant to the viewer the fatal passion/madness of Treadwell.

Winner at Sundance and winner of 10 other major Awards. Home Page

7:30 Mon 10 April

The Saddest Music in the World

Guy Maddin’s newest film is everything one might expect from one of cinema’s most creative and clever auteurs. Adelaides’s only screening. Maddin is the maker of Archangel (screened last year in the Mercury). Starring Isabella Rossellini.
