GetUp

Now, as we gear up for even bigger campaigns, we need your help to spread the word about GetUp. Please sign up to receive GetUp’s action alerts:
http://www.getup.org.au/getupdates.asp
Some of our biggest challenges are just around the corner. Over the next two months our country will debate radical workplace changes, increases in the power of politicians and police, and huge changes to the ownership of media outlets.
If we act together then we can ensure progressive voices are heard, hold decisions makers to account, and help force compromises on important issues. But - to be most effective — we need to act in large numbers.
Please send this email on to your friends and ask them to click the link below and sign up to receive targeted action alerts so we can strengthen our voice:
http://www.getup.org.au/getupdates.asp
GetUp won’t flood you with emails. We know our members are busy, so we only contact you regarding important national issues when we believe our actions will have real political impact.
Thanks in advance for spreading the word. Together we can build a more progressive Australia.

Visions of Adelaide
1836-1886

28 October 2005 – 5 February 2006

Art Gallery of SA, North Terrace

about the exhibition
Spanning the first 50 years of European settlement in South Australia this major exhibition will chronicle the growth of Adelaide from a fledgling colony to a sophisticated city on the cusp of the nationwide1890s depression. This is the first time a comprehensive exhibition of this nature has ever been assembled and reveals the city as a lively centre of artistic, social, sporting, civic and industrial activity. Visualised in distant London as offering the promise of arcadia, we see Adelaide’s life of pleasure emerge through images of horse race-meetings, outdoor festivals, boating on the Torrens and views of Colonel Light’s carefully laid out streets, squares and Park Lands.

The exhibition features works by renown Australian colonial artists including Eugene von Guérard, S.T. Gill, George French Angas, John Michael Skipper and our state’s first professional woman artist, Martha Berkeley.  The exhibition also provides an insight into the significant Kaurna sites included in many of the landscapes, and the changing relations between the European settlers and the Kaurna people, as well as neighbouring Aboriginal groups who gravitated to the site of Adelaide after European settlement. Curated by Tracey Lock-Weir, Curator of Australian Paintings and Sculpture, Art Gallery of South Australia.

CHECKLIST FOR AN ARMED ROBBER - Highly Recommended

Writer Vanessa Bates, Director Maude Davey

Checklist for an Armed Robber is based on the reported versions of two events that occurred within a couple of days of each other in Moscow (Russia) and Newcastle (Australia) in October 2002. The first was the Moscow Theatre siege, in which a group of Chechen rebels took an audience hostage, and the subsequent siege and raid by Moscow police, which resulted in the deaths of all of the rebels and many of the hostages. The second was the attempted armed hold up of a small bookshop in Newcastle. In both situations an older woman attempted to negotiate with a younger armed man.

October 18 to November 5, 8pm at Waterside 11 Nile St, Port Adelaide 8447 6211
Tickets $23, $12 conc.

GTW to Publish 3rd edition of WTO Guide

NEWS FROM GLOBAL TRADE WATCH
** GTW to Publish 3rd edition of WTO Guide
* Exciting news: Global Trade Watch has decided to rewrite and republish our popular booklet “The World Trade Organisation: An Australian Guide”, last published in 2003. The new guide will have updates on the latest developments at the WTO and will be published in the weeks leading up
to the WTO’s December 2005 ministerial in Hong Kong. We are currently raising money to publish 30,000+ copies, which will be distributed FREE to people across Australia. (You can download a PDF of the old 2003 guide here:
http://tradewatchoz.org/guide/New_WTO_Guide.pdf ).

If you enjoyed the 2003 guide and would like to help out this time around, there’s number of things you can do:
1) Help fund the guide by sending a cheque to Global Trade Watch, PO Box 6014, Collingwood North, VIC 3066. We have only raised about $7,000 of the $12,000+ we need, so any donation (from organisations or individuals) is very appreciated!
2) Can you help distribute the guide in your workplace or community or family? If so, please email us at
info@tradewatchoz.org with the number of booklets (A6 size) you would like us to send you, along with your postal address.
3) If you are a graphic designer who would be able to help us with the booklet’s layout during early November, please email us at
info@tradewatchoz.org
We hope the guide will be on the streets by early December. Thanks for any help you can give to make this project a success!*

Touch Wood & Get Lucky! nov 11 - 12

Touch Wood & Get Lucky!

Icebreaker Arts Projects & IHOS Opera in association with the Adelaide Festival Centre iNSPACE program present Touch Wood in the Space on 11 and 12 November.

Touch Wood takes a humorous look at the rituals and obsessions we create to maintain our own sense of security in modern times and explores our sometimes surprisingly close connection to superstition and spirituality.

Six characters meet by chance in a lobby, things get complicated and strange things begin to happen. Prayer Lady, here to save the world; Diva, a hypochondriac singer; Horoscope Woman, a child of the 60s and astrology obsessed; Caretaker, a man with the need for order; Apologiser, driven by the constant need to apologise and Cleaning Woman, a border dweller and so much more – a messenger, a shaman, a witch.

Following on from the recent success of iNSPACE’s A Thing Called Snake, Touch Wood is the final performance for the Centre’s iNSPACE program for 2005.

Touch Wood is directed and choreographed by Juha Vanhakartano, who in 2004 created and directed chamber-dance-opera Undertow which had its world premiere on the 2004 Adelaide Festival of Arts, and which toured Hungary and Finland earlier this year.

Touch Wood is composed by Claudio Pompili, who also composed Lontano Blu premiering at the Adelaide Festival of Arts 2006, and is conducted by Timothy Sexton from the Adelaide Art Orchestra.

IHOS Opera from Tasmania was founded in 1990 by Composer and Artistic Director, Constantine Koukias, and Production Director, Werner Ihlenfeld. They are renowned for challenging conventional notions of opera.

“Everyone interested in the performing arts and opera should see Touch Wood and experience first-hand experimental music theatre. It is also the last performance in our exciting iNSPACE program for 2005, so don’t miss out” says Acting CEO Geoff Bishop.

Touch Wood is high-end operatic-theatre experimentation combining live music and vocal performance with pre-recorded soundtrack and video collages.

Tickets at BASS on 131 246 or at www.bass.net.au

What: Touch Wood

Where: Space, Adelaide Festival Centre

When: Friday 11 and Saturday 12 November, 2005

Time:  8pm

Cost: $20 Adult, $18 Conc & iNSPACE members, $15 iNSPACE subscribers

The iNSPACE program was created by the Adelaide Festival Centre  in 2001 to present contemporary art in its various stages of development.  It enables audiences to share the exploration of new works with the artists.  From hot new ideas and workshops to full and polished performances, iNSPACE stretches boundaries and blurs the line between audience and art.

THE FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY MEREDITH MUSIC FESTIVAL

MEREDITH JUST KEEPS ON GIVING

Yes, it’s TOTALLY sold out so if you aren’t going then maybe this will just give you the shits. Sorry about that. Here are some more artists announced for the Fifteenth Anniversary Meredith. If you think we’d skimp on the value cos its sold out anyway, then you’d be incorrect.

EDDIE CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING

Holy smokes. A crack garage rock band, who clearly have forgotten more than most people know about rock and roll and its history, fronted by a younger fellow who seems to have no formal rock and roll education, but yet gives an absolute master class in what its all about. When it really gets cooking they play some of the most exciting, unrestrained rock and roll ever. The momentum, the tension-and-release, its like they are possessed…it is astonishing. They are taking out the coveted first-band-on-Saturday spot.

J-LIVE

Yes, fans of hip and hop, it is true, J-Live is playing Meredith. Bringing his positive consciousness and bulletproof MC delivery to the Supernatural Amphitheatre on Friday Night, brought to you by Slingshot. We are delighted the great man is coming all that way to play for us.

More? Sure. How about BLACKALICIOUS? Close to the hottest crew on the planet. They’re playing Meredith too. How about that. New album The Craft is unreal, reviews of the live show are gold-plated, last time they left Australia with a great reputation for delivering big time on stage, and now they’re back. What a privilege. That’s massive news. Prepare to enjoy yourself.

Also, a BOLLYWOOD SPECTACULAR will take place on the Friday night. Featuring a dozen Indian traditional dancers in costumes all choreographed to a medley of Bollywood hits, under the guidance of DJ Richi Madan. Sheer, utter entertainment.

Local beat-inspired young guitar turks BRITISH INDIA will also be playing on the Friday Night. They’re good. Rock and roll delivered with true conviction, and good tunes too. That doesn’t happen very often.

And who else to MC the Sunday on the occasion of the Fifteenth Meredith? Who else to take us on a trip down wrong memory lane, via Germany, and the bubblers at school? Who else? Dr GREG FLEET, that’s who. Fleety will be calling the Gift and coming up with funny stuff.

Now don’t forget that tickets are still on sale for The Car Park Festival happening in the city on Sunday December 11th. For details for that one go to www.stjeromesguidetosummer.com

An Unreasonable call for submissions and interest

An Unreasonable call for submissions and interest

In the lead up to Unreasonable Adults 24 hour performance event for
Feast Lesbian and Gay Festival 2005, Sweet/Nothing, the company is
seeking contributions from the public and peers. We are looking for
responses to the following questions: "Tell us about a text message or
email you sent inappropriately?" and/or "Tell us about when you sent a
text message to the wrong person - what happened?" and/or contributions
of love-letter confessionals (to a real or imaginary person/s) all of
which can be sent via the web-submission form link below. We will then
integrate (anonymously of course) this material into the 24 hour event
between 9pm 25 November to 9pm 26 November, in both live and online
performances. You can also be notified of live one-on-one performances
during the 24 hour event by providing your contact details (email
and/or mobile phone).

Submit directly via this web page:

We look forward to receiving your stories, mistakes and

Sweet/Nothing, is a performance-vivisection into the death of desire,
endless queer cut ups of failed love letters, doomed romance and
nothing about love. Using an extensive library of found and original
texts, vhs tapes, dvds, sound bites and long-distance telephone calls,
Unreasonable Adults endeavour to construct and pull apart an unstable
library where nothing is safe, everything is open for inspection and
all is not what it seems. This durational Live Art event will take
place in our studio-lab space in Adelaide and over the space of 24
hours, audiences can log-on to our website and view sporadic streamed
live events, download media, read our journal and also visit the lab
for performances/screenings. Vist the Feast website -
